Introduction:

Walbridge School was established in 1986 by educators and parents to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of children who learn differently. The founders and staff developed effective teaching strategies and curriculum, using the best practices from schools around the country that centered on individualized instruction, multi-sensory teaching, and the use of the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading instruction. The new school was named the Wisconsin Academy of Adaptive Learning, and for the first four years of its operation, it enrolled only students with diagnosed learning disabilities.

Walbridge School provides an individualized education program that teaches students with learning differences by teaching to their strengths not their weaknesses. Walbridge is a small school environment where students more fully realize their academic, emotional, and social learning potential.

With the documented success of small group, explicit, systematic, multi-sensory instruction, enrollment was expanded to include any child who would benefit from the Walbridge instructional approach. In 1991, the school’s name was changed to Walbridge Academy.

Academic Strength:

Pleased with the academic and social progress of their children, parents requested that our school provide a middle school program. A new, carefully constructed sixth through eighth grade curriculum was developed based on, small group instruction as used in the lower grades. The first middle school students were enrolled in the fall of 1994, and this program has been very successful in providing effective academic instruction in a safe and affirming learning environment. The school’s name was changed to Walbridge School in 2003.

While our students are successful in making the transition to a public or private high school, a small number found they would prefer to continue their education at Walbridge School. To meet the needs of these children, in 2010 Walbridge School piloted a high school transition program. This has evolved into a high school diploma program. Admission into the program is highly selective, based largely on the applicant’s desire to learn and work in a small group setting.

Walbridge High School has been designed to meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of children who learn differently, and who haven’t been successful in traditional schools. We are the only 9th through 12th grade day school in Wisconsin specializing in teaching students with learning differences and disabilities.

Our Goal:

The ultimate goal of Walbridge is to provide our students with the skills, self-esteem, and lifelong learning strategies that are needed for success.

To achieve this goal, Walbridge has the following objectives:

  • To provide a full-day elementary, middle school, and high school program using small group, explicit, systematic, multi-sensory instruction to address the needs of each of our students.
  • To develop a sense of confidence, competence, and value within each of our students
  • To adapt our teaching strategies and materials to meet the needs of each student

  • I recommend Walbridge School. My daughter was a struggling reader when she started at Walbridge four years ago. She did not want to go to school and was not able to do her own homework. With small class size and the individualized support that my daughter has received at Walbridge, she now reads for pleasure, does her homework on her own, and is happy to go to school. We appreciate and highly recommend the entire staff at Walbridge School.

  • Small classes, lots of individual attention; fantastic, creative teachers! Walbridge is a school where students who learn differently have a chance to find their strengths and talents in a very supportive, nourishing learning environment. Most of the teachers have been teaching at Walbridge for over 10 years -- very dedicated. Staff turn-around is not an issue, making the curriculum and learning atmosphere very strong
